Meditation & Mindfulness
This month's theme is about Meditation...

 This month we want to encourage you to take notice of how you feel when you press pause, quiet the noise from outside and go inside.  In essence and in simple terms this is a form of meditation.  

Here at Vitalityandmore our vision is to inspire you to take some time out and practice daily meditations.

Meditation, when practiced frequently, fully and wholeheartedly, can help you tap into your greatest potential and assist you with greater focus, better sleep, calmer state of mind and 'beingness' as well as create a better outer world, by changing your inner world.

 

5 Benefits of Meditation:

We believe that mindfulness and practicing regular meditation, brings about a greater state of awareness, appreciation and gratitude.  When you are feeling balanced and centred, you are more aware of yourself and life.

• Benefit 1 - Meditation Reduces Stress

Science and functional medicine continues to confirm that meditation can assist in reducing stress in your life. Meditation reduces the stress hormone cortisol. When we meditate and go within, our brain triggers the release of good 'chemicals' such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, all of which are linked to promoting happiness and eliminating stress.

• Benefit 2 - Improves Sleep

Meditation slows down your heart rate and brings about a greater state of awareness, which is what happens when we fall asleep.  There is a lot written about how mindfulness and meditation can assist with insomnia, because if you drill down to the core of sleep problems they are usually associated with stress, anxiety and worry. So by doing a mind-calming practice focusing on your breathing and the present moment through meditation, will and can help.

• Benefit 3 - Regulates Heart Rate

When we meditate - we activate our bodies 'rest and digest' function as opposed to our 'flight or fight' response. This means that our heart signal is calmer during meditation. The key to note here is that frequent practising of meditation is how we get optimum regulation of our heart health as well as other lifestyle and diet choices.

• Benefit 4 - Makes You Happier

As stated above, meditation can bring about not only a greater state of awareness and calmness to your life, but also happiness through frequent practising. Meditation releases all the good chemicals that promote happiness and longevity. As Deepak Chopra writes in an article he explains meditation as "The Birthplace of Happiness". The silence is where we gain happiness, and silence is also where we return to compassion, empathy, love of ourselves and others. You become happier as you have a greater appreciation and awareness of your divine existence.

• Benefit 5 - Promotes Positive Mood

The deep state of rest that meditation gives us helps promote a positive outlook on life and bring about more positivity. When we meditate, the release of serotonin helps ease tension and brings about a calming effect. This in turn can assist us in feeling calm and positive. Meditation allows us to focus on the present moment, uplift our mood and not worry about the past or the future, reducing fear and anxiety.

Now to some FOOD & RECIPE sharing.

Our Recipe of the Month features our beautiful organically grown rhubarb and strawberry compote jam, the perfect accompaniment for these cold days with warm porridge, toast, pancakes, to bake with in cakes, tarts or galettes or simply enjoy with ice-cream or yoghurt - the options are endless, have we tempted you enough??

Rhubarb and Strawberry Compote Jam

The perfect accompaniment to your winter or summer eating...

 

Ingredients & Directions for our Rhubarb and Strawberry Compote Jam:

Makes 2 small to medium Jars - ensure they have been sterilised first.
(Best to keep refrigerated and seal well)

2 bunches organic rhubarb (stalks removed - the green stalks are poisonous and not for human consumption)

2 cups frozen or fresh organic strawberries

2 cups filtered water

3/4 cup organic maple syrup 

Squeeze of lemon juice at the end to set
* Alternatively to make it #healthier reduce the maple syrup to 1/2 cup or use #monkfruit or agave instead.

Method: Basically place all items in a saucepan on low heat and let it all simmer until all the liquid (water dissolves) and you have a thick type compote texture).
It's our absolute favourite sweet creation- we have made it several times now and it is definitely worth a share here.
Please save the recipe and do tag us if you try it, perfect addition for all your baking or devouring on its own with some ice-cream, yoghurt, chia pudding, porridge, pancakes, and more.
